The Caucasian chalk circle was a very interesting play. The beginning was cool when they started the play dark, then the characters had walked in, sat down, and continued sitting until the music stopped. The title was also interesting I found out that it was taken from a case in the play where Azdak as Judge orders Shauwa to draw a white circled line around the young Michael who is at the centre of a custody row between Natella and Grusha. But Cheshire Academy did a good job presenting this play. I liked how it was serious, but it also had some comedic moments in it, like how the father was acting sick because of the drafting and as soon as he heard that the war was over he was fine.
The play began with soldiers in wwII sitting down in a circle, the white circle, talking and eating cheese, I really don't know why there was cheese involved. But then when they finished talking. There was a girl who decided to tell a story. That's when I got confused. I didn't realize she was telling a story at first until I saw her walking around narrating it and people wasn't paying attention to her like she was not there. Also there wasn't enough actors too so people were playing multiple roles so then I didn't realize who was who towards the end because most the characters was taken up by the same people.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle is actually two stories that had came together at the end. The first story is that of Grusha and the second story is that of Azdak. Both stories started in a Caucasian City ruled by a Governor, who serves a Grand Duke. The Governor has just had a child, Michael, and his wife Natella is very jealous of the attention he gives to his son so she abandoned him. She picked the serves to pick her dresses over the baby, power and money changes people.
The play had different lighting techniques. The way how they used the lighting was cool. They had spotlights, and use lights to show the night and day. They played music to set the mood at a certain time. Sound effects helped too. When there was a baby, there was a sound effect of a baby crying. Mainly because they couldn't have a baby actor on stage. So I thought that was cool. I also saw the people using signals and cues to time the switches right.
I had fun watching it the play, I was very entertained. It did had some negatives about it but it wasn't nothing that bad. It was a cool experience seeing people from your own community put something together like this. Looks like fun to be apart of.
